Help us keep Long Island’s story alive.
The Long Island Historical Society is run by islanders who care about where we come from. Whether you can give a few hours a summer or a few hours a month, there’s a place for you. You don’t need any history background. If you’re curious and willing to pitch in, we’d love to meet you.
Ways to help
Docents. Welcome visitors to our exhibit space at the Long Island Community Center at Mariner’s Wharf, share island stories, and help families find their own connections to the island. We’ll train you, and you can shadow an experienced docent first.
Collections. Help catalog, photograph, and digitally record photographs, documents, and artifacts, and care for them in our climate-controlled archive. Careful, detail-minded people are especially welcome.
Exhibits. Help research, design, and install our summer exhibits, from writing labels to hanging photographs.
Programs. Help plan and host our meetings, talks, and field trips. Past programs have included island authors, local history, and more.
Membership. Help welcome new members, keep our records current, and spread the word about the Society.
Oral history and research. Record the memories of longtime islanders and help families research their roots here.
Leadership. Our President and Vice-President positions are currently open, and our leadership rotates. If you’d like to help guide the Society, or share the role with someone else, please get in touch.
Don’t see a fit? Tell us what you’re good at. We can always use help with photography, writing, social media, fundraising, tech, event setup, and more.
Time commitment:
Volunteering can be as little as one afternoon. Many roles are seasonal, with most activity in the summer exhibit season.
