Our Collections
The Long Island Historical Society holds a substantial and actively growing archive of the island’s history. As of fall 2026 our PastPerfect collections database includes:
Photographs — more than 8,100 records and over 10,000 images documenting island life, fishing and lobstering, summer visitors, family homes, landings, and wartime activity
Archives — nearly 7,500 records and almost 11,000 images of unpublished materials (letters, documents, maps, manuscripts, oral histories, and personal papers)
Objects — 688 three-dimensional artifacts (tools, clothing, household items, maritime gear, and other material culture) with nearly 1,000 images
Library — 357 published volumes, pamphlets, and related materials with more than 900 images
These holdings come from more than 2,900 individual accessions (donations and gifts) and continue to grow through the generosity of island families and friends. The collection is especially strong in photographs and family papers that capture everyday life on Long Island from the late nineteenth century through the present, including the World War II Navy fuel depot period and the events surrounding the 1993 incorporation of the Town of Long Island.
Materials are stored in climate-controlled conditions and are cataloged for research use. The society welcomes inquiries from researchers, genealogists, and families with island connections.
