The Industrial Revolution in the late 1800’s changed the world, and Victorians yearning for the simpler life of their youth “got away from it all” in rustic cabins and campsites in the woods and coastline of Maine. It was a popular notion to deliberately “rusticate” – to study nature, take healthy exercise, eat fresh food, and escape from their hectic everyday world. For the first time, working families had more leisure time and disposable income and they used their time and money to create idyllic retreats on the islands of Casco Bay, including Long Island.
The exhibit explored the idyllic world they created when they “got away from it all.” The story is told in part through the cottages, homes and lives of the Richmond and Harrington families and features antiques, photos, and personal items from the family’s collection and the Long Island Historical Society collection.
